If you're tired of constantly dealing with the weeds growing in between your patio stones, only to have them grow back in a few weeks, I have a tip that's going to change your life and it only costs about $30.

The fix? A 50lb bag of baking soda from your local farm supply store. That's it.

How I discovered this hack

As an East Gwillimbury realtor, I see a lot of homes before they hit the market — and curb appeal issues like overgrown patio weeds can genuinely affect a buyer's first impression. This trick is now something I share with every seller I work with.

It all began about two years ago, I had an estate property listed for sale. The weeds growing between the interlock were out of control, and since there was no homeowner around to maintain the property, weed removal fell to me.

After a few rounds of getting on my hands and knees pulling stubborn weeds (only to watch them return days later), I decided enough was enough. I decided to try something different and grabbed a 50lb bag of baking soda from the farm supply store.

The results were so astounding that l I made a reel about it which went on to get 45 million views that summer. Safe to say I'm not the only one dealing with this problem.

Here's exactly what to do:

  1. Pour baking soda onto the patio

Work it into the gaps between your interlock stones and sweep it in so it settles down into the cracks.

  1. Wet the area with a garden hose

Soak the entire surface so the baking soda dissolves into the cracks- but don't flood it. You want it to absorb, not wash away.

  1. Wait 24-48 hours

Leave it alone. The baking soda gets to work on its own.

  1. Remove the dried weeds

The weeds will be dried out and come out easily. Or just leave them a few extra days and they'll disintegrate on their own.

Why does baking soda kill weeds?

Baking soda is a natural weed suppressant. It raises the salt levels in the soil, making it nearly impossible for weeds to survive. The best part: no harsh chemicals that could damage your interlock, harm your lawn, or pose a risk to kids and pets.

Because it changes the soil pH, weeds won't grow back for a long time, not just a couple of weeks like with manual pulling.

FAQ

Will baking soda damage my interlock or pavers?

No. Baking soda is safe for concrete, brick, and natural stone pavers. It targets the soil in the cracks, not the stones themselves.

Is baking soda safe around kids and pets?

Yes. Unlike chemical herbicides, baking soda is non-toxic and safe for families and animals.

How long does it keep weeds away?

Results vary by climate and rainfall, but most people see weed-free pavers for a full season. Reapply once a year for best results.

Where do I buy a 50lb bag of baking soda?

Farm supply stores like TSC (Tractor Supply) carry large bags for around $30. It's much cheaper than buying grocery store boxes.

Watch it in action

I filmed the whole process and posted it as a reel. 45 million views later, I think it's safe to say this resonated with people. Watch it here. And if you want a laugh, do yourself a favour and read the comment section. It is truly unhinged (in the best way).
